Castle Ring

UK»England»Staffordshire»Castle Ring

Castle Ring is an Iron Age hill fort, situated high up on the southern edge of Cannock Chase and the monument is 7.75 Ha. Apart from the perimeter earthworks, little remains visible. Today the monument is a shadow of its former self. 2000 years of weather and human activity has worn down the banks (although in places they are still over 4 metres tall) and filled in the ditches. When occupied there would have been a wooden stockade on top of the inner bank and just one entrance with heavy wooden gates. There is an onsite interpretation panel which has more information and an illustration showing people involved in harvesting their crops. This panel is sited within a stone edged circle near the car park. This circle feature is 10m (32 feet) across and represents the size of an Iron round house.
