Charlecote Mill

Charlecote Mill: The mill as you see it was probably built in the eighteenth century, but on the site of earlier mills. A mill at Hampton Lucy is even mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It was then valued at 6s.8d. The present mill, apparently built in 1806, is a particularly fine building, with walls eighteen inches thick. Since 1978, John Bedington has had a lease over the mill and he and Tom Mitchell, aided by a band of helpers too numerous to mention, have done extensive repairs to the roof, windows, floor, stairs and doors, gears, stones, sack hoist and bins and the East water wheel. The West water wheel was repaired in 1978 by the Birmingham millwright Bob Atkins at the expense of the BBC for their film of The Mill on the Floss. Although Charlecote mill is principally a commercial mill, it is open for the public to visit on several days each year. It is a full time working mill and not a sterile museum and visitors can enjoy the workaday sights and sounds of a mill in regular use.

The 18 Stagecoach bus runs between Leamington and Stratford via Charlecote every hour, Monday to Saturday, and the 18A hourly on Sundays and bank holidays.

The nearest train stations are at Stratford, Warwick and Leamington.

The mill is on the Charlecote Road out of the village of Hampton Lucy. Four miles east of Stratford-upon-Avon. One mile North West of Charlecote Park main entrance (National Trust), approximately five miles south of Junction 15 (Warwick) on the M40 (take A429 south).
Do not confuse with Wellesbourne Mill, another interesting watermill, on the Kineton Road out of Wellesbourne.

Bank holiday Mondays; the first Sunday of each month from April to October inclusive and National Mills Day. The mill is open from 11am to 5pm on these dates.
