Compton Verney

Compton Verney is a Grade1 listed mansion house designed by Robert Adam in the 1760s, and is set in more than 120 acres of classical parkland landscaped by Lancelot Capability Brown. Until the early 20th century Compton Verney was home to the Verney family for almost 500 years. It has now been transformed from a derelict eighteenth century mansion into a gallery of international standing, offering a combination of high quality attractions and facilities. The art collections include British Portraits, Chinese, British Folk Art, North European and Naples and the Marx Lambert Collection. When the Peter Moores Foundation bought Compton Verney in 1993, the house and grounds were in a state of decay after decades of neglect. The Compton Verney House Trust was established to transform the mansion into a gallery of international standard where visitors can enjoy art in a welcoming, accessible environment. Although the original estate was split up and sold a century ago, the pleasure grounds still clearly reflect the sweeping grassland, ornamental lakes and Cedars of Lebanon for which Brown is famous. The grounds are home to a rich variety of wildlife, such as birds and three species of bat, including the relatively rare Lesser Horseshoe.
