UK»Scotland»Highland»Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle: The original castle was built in the early 13th century as a defence against the Vikings. Demolished, by the Royal Navy in May 1719. Tt wasn't until 1919 that attempts were made to restore the castle to its previous glory, this included the construction of an arched bridge for easier access.

Today the small island and castle are considered one of the most photographed spots in Scotland, and has been the backdrop to many film and television shows.

Spanish Occupation

In April 1719 the Spanish took control and occupied Eilean Donan Castle with the intent of fermenting a Jacobite rebellion against the British Crown. Ultimately the attempt failed after the Royal Navy sent three frigates and destroyed the orginal castle. Many of the Spanish troops escaped, only to be completely defeated, by the British army, at the Battle of Glen Shiel in June 1719.

Legend has it that a ghost of a Spanish Soldier killed in the seige of May 1719 now haunts the castle.
