Foulshiels

Foulshiels : The structure of the woodland varies from young to semi-mature. This is due to the varying site conditions, mammal damage and deliberate fire which necessitated some extensive beating-up in the early establishment phase. This continued fire raising has given rise to an artificial success ional habitat over much of the site with many of the predominantly broadleaved areas within compartment 1 now being scrubby and open in character. Natural regeneration, however, is beginning to supplement some of the more open areas. This includes downy birch, with occasional alder and willow and even some oak. Lodgepole pine is regenerating in areas to the east and northeast of compartment.
