Haig Colliery Mining Museum: Provides a permanent archive of the local mining history and community resource within the remaining winding engine house, which is now a scheduled ancient monument. One of the two massive steam winding engines has been returned to working order, and many artifacts are on permanent display to help describe the life of the local miners and the social history of the area.

How to get here

Car

Haig is situated at Kells, 1/2 a mile south of Whitehaven. Leave the town centre towards St Bees and follow the brown signs for Haig Mining Museum.

Train

Whitehaven is connected by rail to Carlise or Barrow.

Bus

Take an 01 bus from the Bus Station, Preston Street, or Duke Street. Buses leave on the hour or at 20 or 40 minutes past the hour. The journey takes nine minutes.

Foot

A footpath up and along the cliffs begins behind the Beacon Centre. The walk takes about ten minutes.
