Hamsterley Forest: It is the largest forest in County Durham and covers more than 2000 hectares (5000 acres). A mainly oasis of broadleaved and coniferous woodland, sprawling along the sides of a sheltered valley with riverside walks, Visitor Centre/forest shop, cycling and pony trekking facilities and a adventure playground with a stream, it is a popular area for families.

Bike Trail

There are four official trails: Green (easy), Blue (moderate), Red (Difficult) and Black (expert) all of which are waymarked with colour-coded marker posts and there is also "The Loop" which is a skills development circuit and includes features such as rock gardens and north shore obstacles.

The forest is signposted off the A68, north of West Auckland. Cars are charged £3 each on the Forest Drive to access the Forest and it’s facilities.
