Harewood Castle was originally a mid 12th century stone hall house and courtyard fortress. The main block of two storeys, is flanked by four angle towers, one being a plain entrance tower, with the chapel situated over the portcullis chamber. The lower kitchen wing is of four storeys, with a barrel-vaulted basement that contains the well. To the north-west, are the rectangular earthworks of a possible outer bailey and traces of an Elizabethan bowling green survive to the east.
