Originally containing four floors of self-contained family accommodation, its entrance front displays royal and family heraldry, including Richard II's white hart badge.

Legend

The castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of a murdered stable boy Robert Skelton, known locally as the Cauld Lad of Hylton. The events are said to have taken place in the 16th or 17th century.
