In 1644 James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, a dreaded enemy of the Campbells, supported by an undisciplined band of MacDonalds from Ireland swept through Inveraray putting everything to sword and flame and, in which the 8th Earl narrowly escaped with his life.

Among the staff left at Inveraray, a young Irish boy of 12 or 13 employed to play the harp was discovered; the rabble were so outraged that an Irishman would work for their sworn enemy that the poor boy was slewn and his quartered body flung onto the bed.

Legend states that the boy's ghost became deeply attached to the bed, so that when the bed was moved from the old castle, his spirit came too and the MacArthur Room is reputedly haunted.

When a member of the family is about to die in the castle, harp music can be heard coming from this room, the last report of this ghostly phenomenon being when the 10th Duke died in 1949.
