National Coal Mining Museum: Underground Tour of a working mine. Hope Pit is a science with hands-on interactive models and touch screen displays. Also a settling ponds to see how water pumped out of the mine is filtered to remove impuritie and a Nature Trail among the birch, oak and ash woodland. Museum Exhibitions include 1876 steam winder, original pithead baths to see where the miners cleaned up at the end of a shift and the medical centre, to see how injuries were treated. Pit Ponies are stabled during the day so you can meet them and find out about their role in coal mining.

How to get here

Car

From the North:
Leave the M1 at junction 40 (A638) towards Wakefield, take the first right after the traffic lights (Broadway). The Malt Shovel pub will be on your right. At the end of Broadway turn right onto the A642 to Horbury and Huddersfield. Stay on this road for approximately 5 miles through Horbury Bridge and Middlestown. The Museum is on the right.

From the South:
Leave the M1 at junction 38 (A637) and stay on this road through West Bretton and Flockton. At the roundabout at the Blacksmith’s Arms, take the third exit towards Horbury (A642). The Museum is about 2 miles from here on the left.

From the East:
Leave the M62 at junction 29 joining the M1 southbound to London. Leave the M1 at junction 40 (A638) towards Wakefield, take the first right after the traffic lights (Broadway). The Malt Shovel pub will be on your right. At the end of Broadway turn right onto the A642 to Horbury and Huddersfield. Stay on this road for approximately 5 miles through Horbury Bridge and Middlestown. The Museum is on the right.

From the West:
Leave the M62 at junction 24 and follow the signs for Huddersfield. Once in the centre of Huddersfield, follow the signs for the A629/A642 and pick up the brown signs for the Museum.

Bus

From Wakefield or Huddersfield, the Yorkshire Traction 232 bus stops at the Reindeer pub with a short walk to the Museum. The 128 service runs from Wakefield to Dewsbury past the Museum
