Old Quaker Meeting House

UK»England»Warwickshire»Old Quaker Meeting House

Old Quaker Meeting House: This single roomed Meeting House was built between 1681 and 1684 on land bequeathed by Samual Lucas. The walls are of local Lias stone with Hornton ironstone to reinforce the corners and frame the windows and door. The elm roof timbers may have come from an earlier building, so also have the windows and the elaborate. possibly Elizabethan, window catches. The Meeting House is set in a peaceful garden full of snowdrops and primroses in the Spring. Early Quakers suffered greatly in the 17th century for their beliefs. At times so many men and women were in prison that the meetings were kept going by children and a few women. Through the loyalty of its members, Ettington Meeting has continued Quaker worship for over three hundred years.
