Thorney Heritage Museum: The village of Thorney has always been on land which was an island above the surrounding landscape, whether that landscape was of inundated swamp lands or drained fens. Maps on display in the museum indicate settlement in the surrounding area from bronze Age through Roman and Saxon until the monks set up an isolated chapel on the island. Thorney museum concentrates on the time from the first settlement by these monks, relating human life to the geology and water courses of the natural world. To bring the story right up to present times a project is underway to record the recent history of Thorney, and current life in a Fenland village.
