Although the woodland in this reserve generally resembles that found in West Park, a significant feature of Lake Wood is an area of hazel coppice adjoining the Uckfield bypass. And the most outstanding feature of the reserve is a large artificial lake. Around the banks of the lake are a number of striking sandstone outcrops similar to those found in the northern part of West Park. In two places these have been carved away to form an underground boathouse and a pedestrian tunnel.
